Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had the impurities and filth of the Jahiliyyah, and the hands of the wrongdoers and the sinners, not touched the Black Stone, then whoever had an affliction would have sought healing through it, and I would find it today in the same state it was in on the day Allah Almighty created it. Blackness has changed it so that the people of Hell would not see the adornment of Paradise and go towards it. It was a ruby of Paradise. Allah Almighty placed it at the site of the Ka'bah when He sent Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him) down (to the earth); this was before the Ka'bah was built. At that time the earth was pure, no sin had been committed on it, and there were no inhabitants of the earth to defile it. A row of angels was stationed for it at the boundaries of the Haram, guarding it from the dwellers of the earth, and in those days the dwellers of the earth were only the jinn. They were not permitted to look at it, because it was a thing from Paradise, and whoever sees anything of Paradise will enter Paradise; so they had no right to look at it, except one for whom Paradise has become obligatory. The angels used to keep the jinn from approaching it, standing at all the boundaries of the Haram and driving away whoever came from any direction. For this reason it was named the Haram, because they barred the way between them and the Black Stone."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know, and no mention of him is found.
