Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among the people and said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has made Hajj obligatory upon you." A man from among the Bedouins stood up and said: Every year? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped speaking; he became angry and remained (silent) for a long while. Then he began speaking again and said: "Who is the one who asked?" The Bedouin said: It is I, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! Would you like me to say yes? By Allah, had I said yes, it would have become obligatory; and had it become obligatory, you would have abandoned it; and had you abandoned it, you would have fallen into disbelief. The people before you were destroyed by the leaders of hardship (a'immat al-haraj). By Allah, if I were to make lawful for you everything on the face of the earth and make unlawful for you something the size of a camel's foot, you would fall into that very thing." (The narrator says:) On that occasion Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if they were made plain to you, would displease you."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain is hasan (good) and sound.
