Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The scholars of this Ummah are of two kinds. (One is) a man to whom Allah Almighty has given knowledge and he spends it on the people, having no greed in that regard and taking no payment for it. For him the fish of the sea, the animals of the land and the birds in the sky pray for forgiveness. When he appears before Allah Almighty, he will appear as a leader and an honoured person, until he will be in the company of the Messengers. And (the other is) a man to whom Allah Almighty has given knowledge, and he is miserly with that knowledge towards the servants of Allah, is greedy in that regard, and takes payment for it. He will be bridled on the Day of Resurrection with a bridle of fire, and a caller will call out: 'This is the one to whom Allah Almighty gave knowledge, and he was miserly with that knowledge towards the servants of Allah, was greedy in that regard, and took payment for it.' This announcement will continue until the reckoning is finished."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Khirash, whom Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), Imam Abu Zur'ah, Imam Abu Hatim and Ibn Adi declared da'if (weak), while Ibn Hibban called him thiqah (trustworthy).
