وَعَنْ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ عَبْدٍ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَرِيضَةً بَاعَدَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ جَهَنَّمَ كَمَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ، وَمَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا تَطَوُّعًا بَاعَدَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ جَهَنَّمَ مَسِيرَةَ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَفِيهِ الْوَاقِدِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ كَلَامٌ كَثِيرٌ ، وَقَدْ وُثِّقَ .

Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abd al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever observes an obligatory fast of one day in the path of Allah, Allah Almighty removes Hell from that person as far as the distance between the heavens and the earth; and whoever observes a voluntary fast of one day, Allah Almighty removes that person from Hell as far as the distance of travel between the earth and the sky."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Waqidi, about whom there is much criticism; he has (also) been declared thiqah (trustworthy).
