Sayyiduna Muth'ib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he took part in an expedition with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Every one of them had a riding animal on which he rode, except me; I alone did not have one. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and said to me: Ride! I said: I have strength. This happened two or perhaps three times, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are a Mith'ib (perhaps what is meant here is being strong). The narrator says: So this became the name most beloved to me. The narrator says: I was travelling among the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, and some of them were fasting and some were not fasting, and those who were fasting did not find fault with those who were not, nor did the one not fasting find fault with the one fasting.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except that the one named Ash'ath bin Abi al-Sha'tha' did not hear from any of the Companions. And Allah knows best.
