Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whenever a person from any household dies, and after his death they give something in charity on his behalf, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) presents it to that deceased person as a gift on a tray made of light. Then he stands at the edge of the grave and says: O occupant of the deep grave! This is a gift which your family has sent to you, so accept it! Then he brings this gift to him, and he is delighted by it and receives glad tidings, while his neighbours to whom nothing has been sent as a gift become sad."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Muhammad al-Shami, about whom al-Azdi said: He is kadhdhab (a liar).
