Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4752

Imam Abu Ya'la has recorded another narration from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every good deed is a charity. Whatever a man spends on his family and on his property (that is, his slaves and the like) is recorded for him as a charity, and that by which a man protects his honour is recorded for him as a charity." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every expenditure of a believer that is not in disobedience, it is binding upon Allah Almighty to give him more in its place, except for expenditure used on construction; its case is different." Miswar narrates: Muhammad bin al-Munkadir said: We asked Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): What is meant by this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "That by which a man protects his honour"? He replied: That a man gives something to a poet or a foul-tongued person. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: It is as though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant that a man should keep himself safe from his foul tongue.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this narration is reported in the "Sahih". This lengthy narration was recorded by Imam Abu Ya'la. Imam Ahmad recorded it in abridged form, as has already passed. The chain of Imam Ahmad contains a narrator, al-Munkadir bin Muhammad bin al-Munkadir, whom Imam Ahmad and others declared "thiqah (trustworthy)", while Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared him "da'if (weak)". The chain of Imam Abu Ya'la contains a narrator, Miswar bin al-Salt, and he is da'if (weak).
