It is reported about Sayyidah Ra'itah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and the mother of his child, that she was a woman skilled in handicraft. The narrator says: She used to spend her earnings on Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and on his children. She says: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): You and your children have kept me from giving charity; with you all, I am unable to give anything in charity. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: By Allah, I would not like you to have to do this if there were no reward for you in it. That woman came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a woman who does handiwork which I sell. Apart from this income, neither I, nor my children, nor my husband have any other means of support. Because of them I am unable to give anything in charity. So will I receive reward for what I spend on them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to that woman: "Spend on them, for you will receive reward for whatever you spend on them."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani (in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir) recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Ishaq, who is a mudallis (one who practises concealment in narration), but he is thiqah (trustworthy), and he has been corroborated.
