Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does any good, whether a Muslim or a disbeliever, is rewarded for it. We said: O Messenger of Allah! We know about the Muslim being rewarded, but how is the disbeliever rewarded? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When he gives charity, or joins ties of kinship, or does a good deed, Allah Almighty rewards him, and the reward he receives is in the form of wealth or children in this world, and in the form of a punishment lighter than the other punishment. The narrator says: That is, it will be so in the Hereafter. Then he recited this verse: 'Admit the people of Pharaoh into the severest punishment.'"
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Utbah bin Yaqzan, who has been criticised; Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy). The rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
