Sayyiduna Yazid bin al-Akhnas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You may envy one another only regarding two men: a man to whom Allah Almighty has given the Qur'an (its knowledge), and he stays occupied with it night and day and follows its commands, so that someone says: If Allah Almighty were to give me the like of what He has given him, I too would be occupied with it as he is; and a man to whom Allah Almighty has given wealth, and he spends from it and gives charity, so that someone says: If Allah Almighty were to give me as He has given so-and-so, I too would give charity in the same way. A man said: O Messenger of Allah! What is your view about prosperity (or physical strength) that is found in a man?" The narrator says: The rest of the narration has dropped out.
Ahmad recorded it in written form, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir. Its chain contains a narrator, Sulayman bin Musa; he has been criticised, and a group has declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
