Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4555

وَعَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَدْ قُلْتَ لِي : " إِنَّ خَيْرًا لَكَ أَنْ لَا تَسْأَلَ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ شَيْئًا " . قَالَ : " إِنَّمَا ذَاكَ أَنْ تَسْأَلَ ، وَمَا آتَاكَ اللَّهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ رِزْقٌ رَزَقَكَهُ اللَّهُ " .
قُلْتُ : هُوَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ بِاخْتِصَارٍ .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .
Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! You said to me: 'It is better for you not to ask people for anything.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That ruling applies when you are asking. When Allah Almighty gives you something without your asking, it is provision that Allah Almighty has granted you." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is in the Sahih in abridged form. Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
