Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 4541

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best charity is that which leaves (the giver) in sufficiency, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin your spending with the one you support."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Hasan bin Abi Ja'far al-Jufri, and there is criticism concerning him.
