Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 448

Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah reports this statement of his father: I set out with my father, intending to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Somewhere on the way we passed by a tribe and stopped there to spend the night. A shepherd came running to the people of the tribe and said: I will not graze your animals, because every night the wolf comes and takes away a goat, while the idol watches but neither objects nor changes anything. Those people said: Stay with us! The narrator says: I think the narration also has these words: We will go to this idol. Those people came to the idol and said something around it. Then they said to the shepherd: Stay tonight! The shepherd said: I will stay tonight, so that I may see what happens. The narrator relates: We also stayed there that night. The next day, at the time of the morning prayer, the shepherd came running towards the people of the village and began saying to them: Good news! Have you not seen that the wolf was lying tied up in front of the goats without any fetter? Then those people came, and we went along with them. The narrator relates: Then he said: Very well, keep doing like this! The narrator relates: When we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), my father told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this incident, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan toys with these people."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and it revolves around the narrator named Azhar bin Sinan, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak); Ibn Adi says: His narrations are acceptable and not very munkar (objectionable).
