Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, when the people leave him, he (that is, the deceased) hears the sound of their sandals. If he is a believer, the prayer comes to his head, zakah comes to his right side, fasting comes to his left side, and good deeds, acts of kindness and doing good to people come to his feet. Then if the angel tries to come from the side of his head, the prayer says: 'There is no way in from my side.' If he tries to come from the right side, zakah says: 'There is no way in from my side.' If an attempt is made from the left side, fasting says: 'There is no way in from my side.' Then if he tries to come from the side of his feet, good deeds, acts of kindness and doing good to people say: 'There is no room to enter from my side.' Then it is said to the deceased: 'Sit up.' He sits up, and before him it appears as though the sun is about to set. He is asked: 'What do you say about this man who was sent to you?', meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The deceased says: 'I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. He brought us clear proofs from our Lord; we affirmed him and followed him.' It is said to him: 'You have spoken rightly. Upon this belief you lived, upon it you died, and upon it you will be raised again, if Allah wills.' Then his grave is made spacious for him as far as the eye can see. This is what is meant by the saying of Allah Almighty: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.' It is said: 'Open for him a door towards Hell.' A door towards Hell is opened for him, and it is said: 'Had you disobeyed Allah, this would have been your abode.' Then his joy and delight increase. Then it is said: 'Open for him a door towards Paradise.' A door is opened for him, and it is said: 'This is your abode, and this is what Allah Almighty has prepared for you.' Then his happiness and delight increase. Then the skin is returned to what it was in the beginning, and his soul is placed inside a bird that hangs from the trees of Paradise. As for the disbeliever, (the angel) comes to him in his grave from the side of his head, and nothing is found; he comes from the side of his feet, and nothing is found. He (the disbeliever) sits up frightened and terrified. He is asked: 'What do you say about this man who was among you, and what do you testify about him?' He is not guided to the name of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is said: 'Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) (is the one being asked about).' The man says: 'I heard the people saying something, so I said the same as they said.' It is said to the deceased: 'You have spoken the truth. Upon this belief you lived, upon it you died, and upon it you will be raised again, if Allah wills.' Then his grave is made narrow for him until his ribs interlock. This is what is meant by the saying of Allah Almighty: 'And whoever turns away from My remembrance, for him is a life of hardship.' Then the command is given: 'Open for him a door towards Paradise.' A door towards Paradise is opened for him, and it is said to him: 'Had you obeyed Allah Almighty, this would have been your abode, and this is what Allah Almighty would have prepared for you.' Then his regret and wailing increase. Then it is said: 'Open for him a door towards Hell.' A door towards Hell is opened for him, and it is said to him: 'This is your abode, and this is what Allah Almighty has prepared for you.' Then his regret and lamentation increase." The narrator Abu Umar al-Darir said: I asked Hammad bin Salamah: "Would this be one of the people of the qiblah?" He replied: "Yes." The narrator Abu Umar said: It is as though this deceased gave this testimony without certainty, a certainty that would have reached his heart; he had merely heard the people saying something and said it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).
