Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When a person enters his grave, if he is a believer, his deeds, namely prayer and fasting, surround him. The angel tries to come from the side of the prayer, and the prayer turns him back; he tries to come from the side of the fasting, and the fasting turns him back. Then the angel calls out to him: 'Sit up.' The servant sits up, and the angel asks him: 'What do you say about this man?', meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He says: 'Which man?' The angel says: 'Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' The deceased says: 'I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah.' The angel says: 'How did you know that? Did you live in his time?' He answers: 'I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah.' The angel says: 'Upon this belief you lived, upon it you died, and upon it you will be raised again.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the deceased is a sinner or a disbeliever, an angel comes to him, and there is nothing between him and the deceased to turn the angel back. The angel makes him sit and says: 'Sit up. What do you say about this man?' He asks: 'Which man?' The angel answers: 'Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' The deceased says: 'I do not know. By Allah, I heard the people saying something, so I said it.' The angel says to him: 'Upon this belief you lived, upon it you died, and upon it you will be raised again.' A creature is set upon him in his grave, holding a whip whose tip is a live coal, like a camel's mane. It beats him as much as Allah wills. It is deaf and does not hear his cries, so that it might have mercy on him." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) A hadith from this lady is reported in the Sahih, other than this one.
Ahmad recorded it. Al-Tabarani recorded part of this report in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
