Hajib bin Umar narrates: I went with al-Hakam bin al-A'raj to Bakr bin Abdullah al-Muzani. They began discussing the matter of the deceased being punished because of the weeping of the living. Bakr bin Abdullah al-Muzani narrated a hadith to us; he told us: One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated this hadith to us, and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said the contrary. He told us: Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "If a man sets out to fight in the way of Allah, and is then killed as a martyr in some remote part of the earth, and then his wife, out of foolishness and ignorance, weeps over him, will this martyr be punished because of this foolish woman's weeping over him?" A man then said: "The Messenger of Allah spoke the truth, and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said what was wrong."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator who is not known.
