Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 3954

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) to prepare water for his ablution. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself. When he went to relieve himself, he would go far away, until he was out of sight. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had relieved himself and was coming back, he passed by a woman who was sitting at the grave of one of her dead and was lamenting and wailing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped by that woman, and the woman did not recognise him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Fear Allah Almighty and be patient." The woman said: "O servant of Allah! Go and see to your own business." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this to her three times and then left. He took the water for ablution from Sayyiduna al-Fadl. Sayyiduna al-Fadl got up, went to that woman and said to her: "What did the Messenger of Allah say to you?" The woman stood up and said: "Woe to me! This was the Messenger of Allah, and I did not even recognise him!" Then she hurried along until she reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the door of the mosque. She said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I did not recognise you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Patience is at the first shock." He said this three times. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of it is transmitted in the Sahih from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Yusuf bin Atiyyah al-Sa'di, and he is matruk (abandoned) and da'if (weak).
