Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, modesty and 'iyy (that is, hesitancy in speaking) are part of faith; these two bring (a person) near to Paradise and keep (him) far from Hell. Whereas obscene speech and immodesty are from Satan; these two bring (a person) near to Hell and keep (him) far from Paradise." A Bedouin said to Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): "We say in poetry: ''Iyy is part of foolishness.'" Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I am telling you that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (this), and you present your foul poetry before me (against it)!"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Mihsan al-Ukkashi, and he is da'if (weak) and is not to be used as evidence.
