It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he sat down he would say: "You are in a state in which the night and day are passing, with lifespans that will come to an end after a set term, and deeds that are being preserved. Death will come suddenly. Whoever has sown good will soon reap what he longs for, and whoever has sown evil will soon reap it in regret. Every sower will get what he has sown. The slow one cannot get ahead with respect to his share, and the greedy one cannot, through his greed, attain what has not been decreed for him. Whoever is given good, it is Allah Almighty who has given it to him; and whoever is protected from evil, it is Allah Almighty who has protected him. The God-fearing are leaders, the jurists are guides, and sitting with them brings an increase (in knowledge)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
