Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When a person performs ablution (wudu) and performs it well, then comes to the Friday prayer, does not engage in idle talk or behave ignorantly until the imam finishes (the prayer), this becomes an expiation for that person's sins (between) this Friday and the following Friday. And in Friday there is an hour in which, whatever a believing servant asks of Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty grants it to him. And the obligatory prayers are an expiation for the sins committed between them." (Al-Haythami says:) I say:
Abu Dawud recorded this narration in abridged form.
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it, except that he added these words: "If he sees fit, he offers some voluntary prayers; then this becomes an expiation for his sins between this Friday and the next Friday, and (an expiation for the sins) of three more days." The chain of this narration contains a narrator, Atiyyah, about whom there has been much criticism.
