Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The prayer was made obligatory as two rak'ahs and two. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed it in this way in Makkah until he came to Madinah, and in Madinah too he prayed it in this way for as long as Allah Almighty willed. Then two rak'ahs were added to the prayer of the resident, and the prayer while travelling was left in its original state.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Amr bin Abd al-Ghaffar, who is matruk (abandoned).
