Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a servant performs ablution and does it well, then stands for prayer and completes its ruku' (bowing), its sujud (prostrations) and the recitation in it, that prayer says: 'May Allah Almighty protect you as you have protected me.' Then that prayer is taken up towards the sky, and it has radiance and light, and the gates of the sky are opened for it. And when the servant does not perform ablution well, and does not complete the ruku', the sujud and the recitation, the prayer says: 'May Allah Almighty ruin you as you have ruined me.' Then that prayer is raised towards the sky with darkness covering it, and the gates of the sky are closed. Then that prayer is folded up just as an old worn-out garment is folded up, and then it is struck against the face of the person who prayed it."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded something similar. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Ahwas bin Hakim, whom Ali bin al-Madini and al-Ijli declared thiqah (trustworthy), while a group declared him da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this narration have been declared trustworthy.
