Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 2461

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not recite the Qur'an while you are in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), nor while you are bowing or prostrating (do not recite the Qur'an). Do not sit in the manner of iq'a' as a dog squats. Do not pray while you have tied your hair into a knot. Do not spread out your forearms as wild beasts spread theirs. Do not wear qassi (a particular kind of cloth). Do not wear a gold ring, and do not wear a ring on these two fingers: the index finger and the middle finger." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Part of the narration of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned in the Sahih and in other books.
Bazzar recorded it as it is here, and Imam Ahmad recorded part of it. Imam Ahmad added these words in it: "Do not sit in the manner of iq'a' between the two prostrations, and do not play with the pebbles." The narration of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) contains al-Harith, who is da'if (weak); all the narrators of the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) have been declared trustworthy.
