Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever leads people in prayer should fear Allah Almighty and should know that he is a guarantor, and he will be held to account for what he has guaranteed. If he does well, he will receive a reward, as much as the reward of those who prayed behind him, without anything being reduced from their reward; and any shortcoming (on the part of the imam), its burden will be upon him (the imam) alone."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Mu'arik bin Abbad, whom Ahmad, al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), Abu Zur'ah and al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) declared da'if (weak). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his book al-Thiqat.
