Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1874

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla states: When Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the mu'adhdhin giving the adhan, he would say the same words that he said. When he said "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)," Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would also say "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah," and along with it he would say: "Those who denied Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) are the liars."
Imam Abdullah (bin Ahmad) recorded this narration in his Ziyadat. Its chain mentions that a narrator named Abu Sa'id narrated it from Ibn Abi Layla, and I have not found anyone who mentions him (that is, the narrator named Abu Sa'id).
