Sayyiduna al-Faltan bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was present in a gathering. He looked at a man who was walking in the mosque and said: "O so-and-so!" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Here I am." He said nothing else; he only said: "O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Do you bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you read the Torah?" He replied: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "The Injil?" He replied: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "The Qur'an?" He said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! If I wished, I could read it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) adjured him by Allah and asked: "Do you find mention of me in the Torah and the Injil?" He said: "We find mention of one like you, of the emergence of one like you, and of a form like yours. We hoped that that final Prophet would be from among us, but when you appeared, we feared that you might be him. When we investigated the matter, it became clear that you are not him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why is that?" He said: "With him (the final Prophet) there will be seventy thousand people of his nation from whom no account will be taken and who will suffer no punishment, whereas with you there are only a few people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! It is I, and they will be my nation, and they will be more in number than seventy thousand and a further seventy thousand."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
