Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: One night we talked at length in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The next day, when we came to him, he said: "Last night the Prophets and their nations were presented to me. A Prophet passed by with three people with him; another passed by with a group with him; another had a larger number with him; and another had no one with him at all. Then Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) passed by me, and with him was a great host of the Children of Israel. They pleased me, and I said: 'Who is this?' I was told: 'This is your brother Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), and with him are the Children of Israel.' I said: 'Where is my nation?' I was told: 'Look to your right.' When I looked, the horizon was filled with the faces of people. I was told: 'Are you pleased?' I said: 'O my Lord! I am pleased.' Then I was told: 'Along with these people, seventy thousand will enter Paradise without any reckoning.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you! If you are able, be among those seventy thousand; if you fall short, then be among the people of the hillocks (al-Zirab); and if you fall short further, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw people there who were in very great numbers." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Ukkashah bin Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah Almighty for me that He make me among the seventy thousand." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for him. Then another man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah Almighty that He make me among them as well." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ukkashah has preceded you in this." The narrator says: Then we began to discuss who those seventy thousand would be. Some said: "It refers to those who were born in the era of Islam and then never associated anyone as a partner with Allah until they died." News of this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are those who do not have themselves cauterised, do not seek ruqyah (incantation), do not take bad omens, and who place their trust in their Lord."
Ahmad recorded it with various chains; al-Bazzar recorded it in a more complete form than this; al-Tabarani and Abu Ya'la recorded it in a greatly abridged form. Among the various chains of Ahmad and al-Bazzar, the narrators of one are the narrators of the Sahih.
