Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I know about the person who will be the last to enter Paradise. He will be a man who says: 'O my Lord! Keep me away from Hell,' and he does not say: 'Admit me into Paradise.' When the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of Hell have entered Hell, and only that man remains, he will say: 'O my Lord! Why am I here?' The Lord will say: 'O son of Adam! This is what you asked of Me.' He will say: 'O my Lord! Bring me near to Paradise.' The Lord will say: 'O son of Adam! You did not ask Me for that!' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Then Allah Almighty will create a tree for him at the door of Paradise, and the man will say: 'O my Lord! Bring me near to this tree so that I may eat of its fruit and stay in its shade.' The Lord will say: 'O son of Adam! Did you not ask Me only to keep you away from Hell?' The man will keep on asking until he is told: 'Go! You have all that your feet reach and all that your eyes see.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded something similar, though he recorded these words: "The Lord will say: 'O son of Adam! This is what you used to ask of Me.' Meanwhile, a tree will appear before him at the door of Paradise, inside Paradise, and he will say: 'O my Lord! Bring me near to this tree so that I may eat of its fruit and come into its shade.' The Lord will say: 'O son of Adam! You did not ask Me (for anything more)!' The man will say: 'O my Lord! Where is there anyone like You?' The man will keep doing this: whenever he sees something better, he will begin asking, until he is told: 'Go! You have all that your feet go to and all that your eyes see.' So he will run until he is exhausted, and he will point with his hand and say: 'This and this.' He will be told: 'This is yours, and the like of it along with it.' So he will be pleased, to the extent that he will think that what Allah Almighty has granted him He has not granted to anyone among the people of Paradise. He will say: 'If I were permitted, I would provide the people of Paradise with food, drink and clothing from what Allah Almighty has given me, and even then there would be no decrease in what I have.'" The chains of both narrations contain Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi, who is da'if (weak).
