Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The last two men to come out of Hell: Allah Almighty will say to one of them: 'O son of Adam! What did you prepare for this Day? Did you ever do any good? Did you place any hope in Me?' He will reply: 'No, O my Lord!' So the command will be given to take him to Hell, and he will be the one suffering the most intense regret among the people of Hell. Allah Almighty will ask the other man: 'O son of Adam! What did you prepare for this Day? Did you ever do any good deed? Did you place any hope in Me?' He will reply: 'No, O my Lord! (I never did any good,) but I used to place my hope in You.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A tree will appear before that man, and he will say: 'O my Lord! Settle me beneath this tree, so that I may come into its shade, eat of its fruit and drink of its water.' He will keep making a covenant with Allah Almighty that he will ask for nothing besides it. Allah Almighty will settle him beneath that tree. Then another tree will appear before him, more beautiful than the first and with sweeter water, and he will say: 'O my Lord! Settle me beneath this (second) tree; I will ask You for nothing besides it. I will come into its shade, eat of its fruit and drink of its water.' Allah Almighty will say: 'O son of Adam! Did you not make a covenant with Me that you would ask Me for nothing besides it?' The man will say: 'O my Lord! Now I will ask You for nothing besides this.' So Allah Almighty will settle him beneath it and take a covenant from him that he will ask for nothing else besides it. Then a tree will appear before the man near the door of Paradise, more beautiful than both of the earlier trees and with sweeter water, and the man will say: 'O my Lord! I will not ask You for anything besides this; settle me beneath it, so that I may come into its shade, eat of its fruit and drink of its water.' The Lord will say: 'O son of Adam! Did you not make a covenant with Me that you would ask Me for nothing besides it?' The man will say: 'O my Lord! I will ask You for nothing besides this.' So Allah Almighty will place the man beneath that tree and take a covenant from him that he will ask Allah Almighty for nothing besides it. The man will hear the voices of the people of Paradise, and he will be unable to restrain himself and will say: 'O my Lord! Admit me into Paradise!' (When that man enters Paradise,) the Lord will say: 'Ask! And wish!' The man will keep asking and wishing for three days by the reckoning of the days of the world, and Allah Almighty will prompt him about things of which he had no knowledge; he will ask and wish, and when he has finished, Allah Almighty will say: 'O son of Adam! You have what you asked for!'" Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported these words here: "And the like of it along with it." Whereas Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported these words: "And ten times the like of it along with it." One of the two said to the other: "You narrate what you heard, and I will narrate what I heard."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded something similar, though he reported these words from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): "Ten times the like of it." He also reported similar words from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ali bin Zayd, who has been declared trustworthy despite the weakness in him.
