Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 18559

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "A man will keep calling out in Hell for a thousand years: 'Ya Hannan, ya Mannan (O Most Compassionate, O Bestower of favours)!' Allah Almighty will say to Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him): 'Go and bring this servant of Mine to Me!' Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) will go and will find the people of Hell weeping with their heads bowed (or lying on their faces). He (Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him)) will return to his Lord and inform Him of this. The Lord will say: 'Bring him to Me; he is in such-and-such a place.' Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) will bring him and make him stand before his Lord. The Lord will ask: 'O My servant, how did you find your place and your resting place?' He will say: 'O my Lord, the worst place and the worst resting place.' The Lord will say: 'Take My servant back!' The servant will say: 'O my Lord, I did not expect that, once You had brought me out of it, You would send me back into it.' The Lord will say: 'Leave My servant!'"
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abu Zilal; the majority declared him da'if (weak), and Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy.
