Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 1855

Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say the words of the adhan twice each, and he would double the words of testimony. Facing the qiblah, he would say, "I bear witness that there is no god besides Allah Almighty," twice, and, "I bear witness that Sayyiduna Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," also twice. Then he would repeat them (tarji'), saying "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah)" twice and "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)" twice, while facing the qiblah. Then he would turn slightly to the right and say "Hayya 'ala al-salah (Come to prayer)" twice. Then he would turn to the left and say "Hayya 'ala al-falah (Come to success)" twice. Then, facing the qiblah, he would say "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah)." He used to say the words of the iqamah singly, and he would say "Qad qamat al-salah (The prayer has been established)" once.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir. Its chain also contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Ammar bin Sa'd, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Ibn Majah recorded this narration from this Companion: "Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say the words of the adhan twice each and the words of the iqamah only once each."
