Sayyiduna Sa'd al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The adhan began in this way: a man from the Ansar was shown it in a dream. He informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to give the adhan. The Ansari began dictating the words to him: "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)." Then he repeated these words: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah." Then he recited these words: "Hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah (Come to prayer, come to prayer), hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah (Come to success, come to success), Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Ammar bin Sa'd, whom Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak).
