Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 18509

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a maidservant who used to serve him; her name was Barrah. A man met her and said: "O Barrah! Keep your locks of hair covered! For Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) will be of no use to you against Allah Almighty." That maidservant told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out dragging his cloak, with his cheeks turning red. The narrator says: We, the Ansar, knew the anger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from his coming out dragging his cloak and from his cheeks being red. We took up our weapons and came to him, and we said: "O Messenger of Allah! Order us with whatever you wish. By the One who sent you with the truth, if you were to give us an order concerning our mothers, our fathers and our children, we would carry out your command concerning them too." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, praised and glorified Allah Almighty, and then said: "Who am I?" We said: "You are the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is right, but who am I?" We said: "You are Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the leader of the children of Adam, and I do not say this out of pride. I will be the first to shake the dust off my head on the Day of Resurrection, and I do not say this out of pride. I will be the first person to enter Paradise, and I do not say this out of pride. What is the matter with people that they think that kinship with me will be of no benefit? It is not as those people think. I will intercede and my intercession will be accepted, until the one for whom I intercede will himself intercede and his intercession too will be accepted, until even Iblis will try to put himself forward to obtain (my) intercession."
At-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its narrators have been declared trustworthy, although there is a great deal of weakness in the narrators named Ubayd bin Ishaq al-Attar and al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil.
