وَعَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ قَالَ : مَاتَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَجَعَلَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يُثْنُونَ عَلَيْهِ ، وَيَذْكُرُونَ مِنْ عِبَادَتِهِ ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - سَاكِتٌ ، فَلَمَّا سَكَتُوا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " هَلْ كَانَ يُكْثِرُ ذِكْرَ الْمَوْتِ ؟ " . قَالُوا : لَا . قَالَ : " فَهَلْ كَانَ يَدَعُ كَثِيرًا مِمَّا يَشْتَهِي " . قَالُوا : لَا . قَالَ : " مَا بَلَغَ صَاحِبُكُمْ كَثِيرًا مِمَّا تَذْهَبُونَ إِلَيْهِ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ حَسَنٌ .
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) began to praise him and mention his worship, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. When the people fell silent, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did he remember death often?" The people replied: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did he give up most of the things he desired?" The people replied: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your companion did not attain much of that towards which you are heading."
