Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 18102

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from the people of al-Aliyah came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about the hardest (that is, most difficult) thing in this religion and the softest (that is, easiest) thing in it!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Its softest thing is to bear witness that there is no deity except Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger. And, O man from al-Aliyah, its hardest thing is trustworthiness (amanah). The one who has no trustworthiness has no religion, nor any prayer, nor any zakah. O man from al-Aliyah! Whoever acquires wealth unlawfully and wears a shirt bought with it, his prayer will not be accepted until he takes that shirt off. O man from al-Aliyah! Allah Almighty is far too exalted and sublime to accept the deed or the prayer of a person who has on his body a shirt of the unlawful."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abu al-Janub, who is da'if (weak).
