Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Beware! Detachment from the world does not mean declaring the lawful to be unlawful, or wasting wealth. Rather, detachment from the world means that what you have should not be more reliable in your view than what is with Allah Almighty, and that when you are struck by an affliction, you should be eager for the affliction for the sake of gaining its reward, wishing that the affliction had remained with you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Amr bin Waqid, whom the majority declared da'if (weak), while Muhammad bin al-Mubarak said: He is saduq (truthful). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
