Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Once I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came to him, gave the greeting of peace and then left. I submitted: O Messenger of Allah, I love this man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Have you told him? I submitted: No. He said: Tell your brother this! The narrator says: I went to that man, greeted him with peace, then took hold of his shoulder and said: By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah. That man said: I too love you for the sake of Allah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: I said: Had the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not ordered me to tell you about this, I would not have done so.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except al-Azraq bin Ali and Hassan bin Ibrahim, and both of them are thiqah (trustworthy).
