Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17827

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has the love of the world in his heart is afflicted by three things: a misery whose toil never ends, a greed that never reaches contentment, and a hope that has no final limit. The world both seeks and is sought. Whoever seeks the world is sought by the Hereafter, until death comes to him and seizes him; and whoever seeks the Hereafter is sought by the world, until he receives his full provision from it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Jabrun bin Isa al-Muqri', from Yahya bin Sulayman al-Hafari, from Fudayl bin Iyad. I do not know Jabrun. As for Yahya, al-Dhahabi mentioned in Mizan al-I'tidal, at the end of the biography of Yahya bin Sulayman al-Ju'fi: "As for his namesake Yahya bin Sulayman al-Hafari, I know of no harm in him." After that he mentioned Yahya bin Sulayman al-Qurashi; Abu Nu'aym said: "There is criticism of him," and Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned him. If they are two different people, then al-Hafari is thiqah (trustworthy) and the hadith is sahih (authentic) according to the condition of the khutbah, and Allah knows best. The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
