Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not teach you the words that Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) said when he was crossing the sea with the Children of Israel?" We said: "Yes! O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite this:
'Allahumma laka al-hamd, wa ilayka al-mushtaka, wa anta al-musta'an, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahi al-Aliyy al-Azim'
(O Allah! All praise belongs to You alone; to You complaint is made, and from You help is sought; nothing can happen without the help of Allah Almighty, the Most High, the Most Great.)"
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Since I heard these words from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I have never abandoned them. Shaqiq says: Since I heard these words from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), I have never abandoned them. Al-A'mash says: Since I heard these words from Shaqiq, I have never abandoned them.
Al-A'mash says: Someone came to me in a dream and said: "O Sulayman! Add these words to those words:
'Wa nasta'inuka ala fasadin fina, wa nas'aluka salaha amrina kullih'
(And we seek Your help against the corruption within us, and we ask You for the betterment of all our affairs.)"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir; its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
