Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17413

Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), or perhaps someone else, narrates: Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Abd al-Muttalib was better for his people than you; he used to feed them liver and camel hump, while you are slaughtering them!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him whatever Allah willed. Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What do you command me to recite?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite this:
'Allahumma qini sharra nafsi, wa'zim li ala arshadi amri'
(O Allah! Protect me from the evil of my own self, and make me resolute upon the most rightly guided course in my affair.)"
Then that man went away and accepted Islam. Then he came and said: "I came to you and you told me: 'Recite this:
'Allahumma qini sharra nafsi, wa'zim li ala arshadi amri'
(O Allah! Protect me from the evil of my own self, and make me resolute upon the most rightly guided course in my affair.)'
What should I recite now?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite this:
'Allahumma ighfir li ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu, wa ma akhta'tu wa ma amadtu, wa ma alimtu wa ma jahiltu'
(O Allah! Forgive me what I did in secret and what I did openly, what I did by mistake and what I did deliberately, what I know and what I am unaware of.)"
Ahmad recorded it; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
