Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reports concerning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with these words:
'Allahumma anta al-awwalu fa la shay'a qablaka, wa anta al-akhiru la shay'a ba'daka, Allahumma a'udhu bika min kulli dabbatin nasiyatuha bi yadika, wa a'udhu bika min al-ithmi wa al-kasal, wa min 'adhabi al-nar wa min 'adhabi al-qabr, wa min fitnati al-ghina wa min fitnati al-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min al-ma'thami wa al-maghram, Allahumma naqqi qalbi min al-khataya kama naqqayta al-thawba al-abyada min al-danas, Allahumma ba''id bayni wa bayna khati'ati kama ba''adta bayna al-mashriqi wa al-maghrib, hadha ma sa'ala Muhammadun rabbahu, Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra al-mas'alah, wa khayra al-du'a', wa khayra al-najah, wa khayra al-'amal, wa khayra al-thawab, wa khayra al-hayah, wa khayra al-mamat, wa thabbitni wa thaqqil mawazini, wa ahiqq imani, warfa' darajati, wa taqabbal salati, waghfir khati'ati, wa as'aluka al-darajati al-'ula min al-jannah, amin, Allahumma wa najjini min al-nar, wa maghfiratan bi al-layli wa al-nahar, wa al-manzila al-salih, amin, Allahumma inni as'aluka khalasan min al-nari saliman, wa adkhilni al-jannata aminan, Allahumma inni as'aluka an tubarika li fi nafsi, wa fi khuluqi, wa fi khaliqati, wa ahli, wa fi mahyaya, wa fi sam'i wa fi basari, wa fi ruhi, wa fi khuluqi wa fi khaliqati, wa ahli, wa fi mahyaya wa fi mamati, Allahumma wa thaqqil hasanati, wa as'aluka al-darajati al-'ula min al-jannah, amin' (O Allah, You are the First, there was nothing before You, and You are after all things, there will be nothing after You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from every creature whose forelock is in Your hand. I seek refuge in You from sin and laziness, from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of affluence and from the trial of poverty. I seek refuge in You from sin and debt (or having some payment become due). O Allah, keep my heart clean of sins as You have kept the white garment clean of dirt. O Allah, put such distance between me and my sins as You have put between the East and the West. This is what Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asks of his Lord. O Allah, in asking You, I ask You for the best supplication, the best success, the best deed, the best reward, the best life and the best death. Keep me firm, make my scales heavy, make my faith strong, raise my rank, accept my prayer, forgive my sin, and I ask You for the high ranks of Paradise. Amin! O Allah, grant me salvation from Hell, grant me forgiveness by night and by day, and grant me a good abode. Amin. O Allah, I ask You for deliverance from Hell in safety, and admit me into Paradise in a state of security. O Allah, I ask You to place blessing for me in my self, my hearing, my sight, my soul, my creation, my character, my family, my life and my death. O Allah, make my good deeds heavy, and I ask You for the high ranks of Paradise. Amin!)
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and he recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in abridged form with various chains; the narrators of one of the two chains of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, whose wording this is, and the narrators of al-Mu'jam al-Awsat are thiqat (trustworthy).
