Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a gathering when a man came and greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and those present. He said: "Al-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah (peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him, saying: "Wa alaykum al-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (and upon you be peace, the mercy of Allah and His blessings)." When the man sat down, he recited these words:
'Alhamdulillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi, kama yuhibbu rabbuna an yuhmada wa yanbaghi lahu' "All praise belongs to Allah alone, praise that is abundant, pure and full of blessing, such praise as our Lord loves to be praised with, and as befits His majesty."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What did you say?" He repeated before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what he had recited earlier. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, ten angels rushed towards it, each of them eager to record it, but they did not understand how to write it, until they took it up to the Lord of Might, and the Lord said: 'Record it just as My servant has said it.'"
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded from this Companion a narration about the supplication recited at the opening of the prayer, which is other than this one and shorter than it.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
