Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where are those who have gone ahead (al-sabiqun)?" The people said: "Some people have gone on ahead and some are coming behind." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where are those who have gone ahead? Those who are constantly absorbed in the remembrance of Allah. Whoever would like to enjoy the fruits of the gardens of Paradise should remember Allah abundantly."
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Musa bin Ubaydah, who is da'if (weak).
Ibn al-Athir said: It is said 'hatara bi al-shay' wa istahtara bihi' when a person is devoted to a thing and does nothing besides it.
