بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي الْأَبْدَالِ ، وَأَنَّهُمْ بِالشَّامِ .

وَعَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " لَا يَزَالُ أَرْبَعُونَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي قُلُوبُهُمْ عَلَى قَلْبِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، يَدْفَعُ اللَّهُ بِهِمْ عَنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ ، يُقَالُ لَهُمْ : الْأَبْدَالُ " .
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " إِنَّهُمْ لَمْ يُدْرِكُوهَا بِصَلَاةٍ ، وَلَا بِصَوْمٍ ، وَلَا صَدَقَةٍ " . قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَبِمَ أَدْرَكُوهَا ؟ قَالَ : " بِالسَّخَاءِ ، وَالنُّصْحِيَّةِ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ عَيَّاشٍ الْأَحْدَبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي رَجَاءٍ الْكَلْبِيِّ ، وَكِلَاهُمَا لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will always be forty people in my Ummah whose hearts will be like the heart of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Because of them Allah Almighty will ward off (punishment and the like) from the people of the earth; they will be called the Abdal." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will not reach this rank because of prayer, fasting or charity." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then by what will they reach this rank?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Through generosity and through sincere goodwill towards the Muslims (they will reach this rank)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it through Thabit bin Ayyash al-Ahdab from Abu Raja' al-Kalbi, and I do not know either of them; the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
