Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16544

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found some people from various Arab tribes boasting before one another. I went in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "O Abu al-Darda'! What is this matter that I am hearing?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah! These are the Arabs boasting before one another." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Darda'! When you have to boast before people, boast by Quraysh; when you have to display numbers, display numbers by Tamim; and when you have to fight, fight with the help of the tribe of Qays. For their (the Arabs') faces are Kinanah, their tongue is Asad, and their horsemen are Qays.
O Abu al-Darda'! Allah Almighty has horsemen in the heaven through whom He fights His enemies, and they are the angels; and Allah Almighty also has horsemen on the earth through whom He fights His enemies, and they are the people of the tribe of Qays.
O Abu al-Darda'! Those who will be the last to fight on behalf of Islam, at a time when only the mention of Islam remains, and the last to fight on behalf of the Qur'an, at a time when only its written form remains, will be people belonging to the tribe of Qays.
The narrator says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! People of (which branch of) Qays?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People belonging to Sulaym."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains the narrator Sulayman bin Abi Karimah, who is da'if (weak).
