Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16372

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One day we were sitting in the mosque in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We were a group from the Ansar, a group from the Muhajirun, and a group from Banu Hashim. A dispute arose among us about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): which of us was closest to him and most beloved to him? We said: "We, the people of the Ansar, believed in him, followed him, fought alongside him, and we are his battalion facing the enemy; so we are closest to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and most beloved to him." Our brothers from the Muhajirun said: "We are the ones who emigrated to Allah Almighty and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); we left our clans, our families and our wealth, and we too took part in the battles just as you did, and we were present wherever you were present; so we are closest to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and most beloved to him." Our brothers from Banu Hashim said: "We are the family of the Messenger of Allah; we too were present on the occasions where you were present, and we were there wherever you were there; so we are closest to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and most beloved to him." Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, turned towards us and said: "What are you talking about?" So we repeated our respective positions. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Ansar: "You have spoken the truth; who can reject what you say?" Then we told him what our brothers from the Muhajirun had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They have spoken rightly and truthfully; who can reject what they say?" Then we told him what Banu Hashim had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They have spoken truthfully and rightly; who can reject what they say?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not judge between you?" We said: "Yes indeed! O Messenger of Allah, may our fathers and mothers be sacrificed for you." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"O people of the Ansar, as for you, I am your brother." They said: "Allahu Akbar! We have won it, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "O people of the Muhajirun, as for you, I am one of you." They said: "Allahu Akbar! We have won it, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "O Banu Hashim, as for you, you are from me and you will come to me." The narrator said: We stood up, every one of us content and rejoicing in his bond with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abu Miskin al-Ansari, whom I do not know; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy), though there is disagreement about some of them.
