Sayyiduna Khawwat bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We camped with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the place called Marr al-Zahran. The narrator says: I came out of my tent, and there some women were talking. This pleased me, so I went back, took out my bag, took a fine garment out of it and put it on. Then I came and sat with those women. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his tent and said: "O Abu Abdullah!" When I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I was overcome with awe. I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! My camel has become unruly, and I am looking for a rope for it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went off, and I too went after him. He handed his cloak to me, then he entered a thicket of trees. The sight of the whiteness of his body among the green leaves of the trees is as though it is still before my eyes today. He relieved himself, then he performed ablution, then he came back, and water was flowing from his blessed beard onto his chest. He asked: "O Abu Abdullah! What became of your camel's unruliness?" Then we set off, and on the way, whenever he reached me, he would say this very thing: "O Abu Abdullah! Peace be upon you; what became of the unruliness of that camel of yours?" When I saw this situation, I came to Madinah quickly, and I avoided going to the mosque and avoided sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When a long while had passed, I came to the mosque at a time when the mosque is empty. I set out and came to the mosque and began to pray there. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of one of his apartments and came along; he offered two short rak'ahs. I prolonged my prayer, hoping that he would go away and leave me as I was. He said: "O Abu Abdullah! Pray as long as you wish; until you finish your prayer, I am staying here." I thought to myself: "By Allah! I will surely present my apology before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I will surely remove the misunderstanding of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." When I finished the prayer, he said: "O Abu Abdullah! Peace be upon you; what became of your camel's unruliness?" I submitted: "By the One who sent you with the truth! Since I accepted Islam, it has not become unruly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on you!" Then he never again repeated anything of what had happened before.
Al-Tabarani recorded it through two routes; the narrators of one of the two are the narrators of the Sahih, except for al-Jarrah bin Makhlad, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
