Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates: In 9 AH, when the people set out for Hajj, Sayyiduna Urwah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a Muslim. He asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to return to his people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear that they will kill you." He said: If they found me asleep, they would wake me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, and he returned to his people as a Muslim. He arrived back at night, and the people of the Thaqif tribe came and greeted him. He invited them to Islam, but they accused him, showed their anger against him and made him hear things he had not expected. Then they rose and left Sayyiduna Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him). When the time of suhur came and true dawn began to break, Sayyiduna Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood on the upper room of his house, called the adhan for the prayer and recited the testimony of faith. A man from the Thaqif tribe shot him with an arrow and martyred him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of Urwah is like that of the companion of Ya-Sin, who invited his people to Allah, and they killed him."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and a similar report has been transmitted from al-Zuhri. Both reports are mursal, and the chains of both are hasan (good).
