Sayyiduna Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Julaybib (may Allah be pleased with him) was a man who would go in to the women; passing by them, he would also joke with them. I said to my wife: "Never let Julaybib come in to you. If he comes in to you, I will do this and I will do that." The narrator says: Among the Ansar, when a man had a widowed or divorced woman in his household, he would not marry her off until he found out whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had any interest in her or not. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man from the Ansar: "Give your daughter in marriage at my word." He said: "Very well, O Messenger of Allah! This is an honour and a delight to the eyes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not want to marry her myself." The man asked: "Then for whom?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For Julaybib." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Let me consult the girl's mother." Then he came to her mother and told her: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent a proposal of marriage for your daughter." The woman said: "Very well, this is a joyful matter." The man told her: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has not proposed for this girl for himself; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has proposed for Julaybib." The woman said: "For Julaybib? That cannot be. By Allah! We will not marry her to him." When the man got up intending to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to tell the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the girl's mother's reply, the girl said: "Who has sent you the proposal of marriage?" The girl's mother told her about it, and the girl said: "Are you rejecting the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Hand me over to that man; he will not let me come to ruin." Then the girl's father went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), told him about it and said: "Do as you see fit." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married that girl to Sayyiduna Julaybib (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to take part in a battle. When the battle was over, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you find anyone missing?" The people said: "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But I find Julaybib missing." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Search for him." The people found that man lying beside seven men. Sayyiduna Julaybib (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed those seven men, and he himself had also been martyred by their blows. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! He is lying beside seven men whom he killed, and those seven men martyred him." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the body of Sayyiduna Julaybib (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "He killed seven men and those men killed him. He is from me and I am from him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this two or perhaps three times. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed him on his forearms and had a grave dug for him; his bier was nothing but the forearms of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered him into the grave. The narrator did not mention whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had him washed or not. The narrator Thabit says: His widow was the most generous-spending woman among the Ansar. Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talhah narrated this to Thabit; he said: "Do you know what supplication the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made for that woman?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: "O Allah! Pour goodness upon this woman, and do not make her life one of hardship." The narrator says: So there was no widow among the Ansar who spent more than this woman (that is, who was more prosperous).
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This report is mentioned in the Sahih, but without mention of the proposal and the marriage.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
