Qays al-Madani narrated: A man came to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about something. Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Go to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)! (For once) Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), a certain man and I were in the mosque, remembering our Lord and supplicating to Him, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us, until he came and sat with us, and we fell silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Go back to what you were doing.'" Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So my companion and I supplicated before Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying Amin to our supplication. Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) supplicated, saying: "O Allah! I ask You for what my two companions have asked, and I ask You for knowledge that is not forgotten." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amin!" We said: "O Messenger of Allah! We too ask Allah Almighty for knowledge that is not forgotten." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This boy from Daws has beaten you to it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. As for the narrator Qays, he was the preacher of Umar bin Abd al-Aziz; no one other than his son Muhammad narrated from him, and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
